EMBEDDED SYSTEM DESIGN OVERVIEW

Embedded Systems are characterized by mixed hardware and software components with efficient processing, I/O and storage resources. Such systems generally use microprocessors, or they may use custom-designed chips or both. They are used in automobiles, planes, trains, space vehicles, machine tools, cameras, consumer and office appliances, cell phones, PDAs and other handhelds as well as robots and toys. The uses are endless, and billions of microprocessors are shipped every year for a myriad of applications.

Examples

  • Engine controllers and antilock brake controllers.

  • Automatic machines.

  • Fast switching.

  • Computer netword equipment, including routers, timeservers and firewalls.

  • Fast & sophisticated drivers.

  • Home automation products like thermostats, air conditioners, sprinklers and security monitoring systems.

  • Handheld calculators.

  • Household appliances including microwave ovens, washing machines, television sets, DVD players/ recorders.

  • Inertial guidance systems, flight control hardware/software and other integrated systems in aircraft and missiles.

  • Medical equipment.

  • Measurement equipment such as digital storage oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and spectrum analyzers.

  • Multifuction wristwatches.

  • Personal digital assistants (PDAs) i.e. small handheld computers with PIMS and other applications.

  • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for industrial automation and monitoring.

  • Stationary videogame consoles and handheld game consoles.
